Nature The End of Art Details
Writing about Alan Sonfist in the New York Times in 1970, art critic Grace Glueck noted: "Once upon a time, it was a function of art to mirror nature, but in the new ecological era, art is more likely to be nature." In Sonfist's visionary work, nature becomes art; it is brought directly into art to create cultural simulacra of natural phenomena. In 1965, when the ecological era was in it's infancy Sonfist gained recognition with his creation of the first urban forest in New York City, on a site in Greenwich Village. This Time Landscape re-creates a precolonial forest in the heart of the modern city. It has become a model for both artists and landscape architects. Over the years, the piece has evolved through the natural cycles of continuous decay and renewal, and it has been landmarked to assure its future continuity. Also in 1965, Sonfist advocated the building of monuments dedicated to the history of unpolluted air and stated that bird migrations should be reported as public events.
